Really hope I was able to help someone as particular as I! I would not trust the ol’ 3 finger method because if you have slim fingers (like me) this could potentially be way too tight for your chain and risk havoc happening or vice versa, fat fingers, it could be too loose. Appears that these new models like 45mm of slack right behind the chain slide while the previous models ran 35mm-45mm right behind the chain slide.
#CHAIN SLACK TOOL HOW TO#
I’m not sure why Honda switched up how to check for slack in their manuals 21’+ but I hope this helps confusion or anyone that is particular like I am. I then bolted the linkage and shock back together and rechecked the slack with my slack tool and got 45mm. I then adjusted the chain adjuster bolts to get to this slack measurement of 1/2”. The slack at the tighest position was about 5/16” which is obviously too tight because you want to have 1/2” of slack at the tightest position. So, what I did to get the chain into spec was set my rear tire up to where it is perfectly level between the swing arm bolt and the rear axle (photo above). I then took the bolts out of the linkage (to be able to raise the swing arm all the way through the stroke) and the chain was binding up, bad.
#CHAIN SLACK TOOL MANUAL#
I originally set the slack per what the manual said and if I were to utilize the motion pro chain slack tool (link attached below) the slack measured 40mm. Photo 4: Putting the swing arm perfectly level to check if the slack is at 1/2” at its tightest position. Photo 3: The correct slack at 45mm behind the chain slide. I misinterpreted the manual because I assume you measured it the same as previous models. Photo 2: The incorrect 70mm slack behind the chain slide. I did not get a photo of it at 45mm but this is the correct slack behind the chain guide for these newer 2021-2023 models. Photo 1: The incorrect 70mm slack with the motion pro slack tool in action. So how are you guys measuring the slack? Same as old gen(35-45mm delta)? three fingers? Or am I not understanding their method?įor now I've use the old measurements and it looks ok to me.Ĥ5mm of slack is what you want directly behind the chain slide. The chain is never parallel to the swingarm like pictured.Īlso, in my understanding of geometry, their method doesn't makes any sense if you add or remove teeth to the rear sprocket, am I dumb? If you measure at any other positions where the two parallel line are in the drawing, the measure vary very much. The bike doesn't even squat down if you get it off the stand. I've measure the chain exactly like they say and exactly where the arrow are and the chain is extremely tight.

Only problem is that the drawing is really far from reality. Now they want us to only measure the distance between the swingarm and highest chain position

With the past gen (and possibly every other bike) we use to measure the delta between lowest and highest position of the chain. The new owner manual present a new method to measure the slack, but it doesn't make any sense at all. How are you guys measuring the chain slack on your 2021 CRF 450 when adjusting the chain?
